Search for a Book
You can use the Quick Search box on the library home page to search for books, as pictured below.
The default setting will find books, articles, and other materials. You can use the books/media tab to specifically search for books and DVDs. You can also limit your results to books on the search results page through the drop-down menu in the search box, as pictured below.
Another option is to use the Refine your results options, as shown here:
Locate a Book
Above is a search result for a book on college drinking. The listing shows the title, author, year of publication, and indicates that it is on a shelf with circulating books on the second floor. It also gives the Call Number, the string of letters and numbers highlighted in the image, which is used to locate the book on the shelves.
Below is an example of a listing for an e-book:
Clicking through the title or the "Available Online" will bring up a link where you can view the book on screen. Under "View Online" is a link to the database with the book. In the example shown below, the link is "Ebook Central Academic Complete."
You can also get books from other libraries through interlibrary loan, as explained in the next section.
Finding Books at other Libraries
If SUNY Broome does not have a book you need, you can get it from another library through interlibrary loan. A library that has the book will send it here at no cost to you, and you will be notified when it arrives. In the picture below you can see Other Libraries as an option in the drop-down menu in the search box.
Select Other Libraries from the drop-down menu in the search box to find books in other libraries. Here is an example of a result:
Instead of giving book location information, the listing says "Check for available services." Click through that link or the title to get to the link to initiate the interlibrary loan process.
The GetIt (Books) link will take you into the interlibrary loan system.
First time users will need to fill out a registration form to use the system. Returning users can log in to submit their requests. Because the books have to be shipped here, it can take a week or more for them to arrive, so plan accordingly.
